Leisure and Culture at The Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Lake Como

From its waterfront location on Italy’s sparkling Lake Como, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo is an authentic Art Nouveau palace that offers guests and visitors a truly unique and luxurious experience.  With more than 20,000 square metres of private grounds, there is no end to the leisure and cultural activities on offer at the opulent 105-year-old hotel.

The lake itself takes centre stage, with unsurpassed natural beauty stretching from the hotel to the town of Bellagio across the water, to the vista of the majestic Grigne mountains.  Guests are welcome to take Ruy, the hotel’s very own perfectly restored Venetian motor launch, out to discover the magic of the lake in exclusive style.  The splendid craft, with its mahogany hull and slender form, is a unique piece built in 1961 by the celebrated boat makers Cucchini of Venice as a ‘casada’; the private transport typical of the Venetian aristocracy.  Used today as a water limousine, it provides excursions and a wonderful experience for the guests of Grand Hotel Tremezzo.

The villas of Lake Como provide a fabulous opportunity to go back in time and rediscover the excitement of the European travellers who lived here and wrote, composed, painted, loved and dreamed, inspired by the charm of this paradise.  Neighbouring Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Villa Carlotta is the most famous on Lake Como, from its centuries-old botanic gardens to its paintings, sculptures and tapestries inside.  Nearby is the 1787-built Villa Balbianello, where scenes from James Bond’s Casino Royale and Star Wars Episode II were filmed.  The stunning villa is available to explore on guided tour, however those who wish to walk the dramatic sculptured gardens alone can do so on certain days.  Villa Melzi’s gardens in the town of Bellagio feature giant rhododendrons and azaleas covering the green slopes and a pretty water-garden of Chinese inspiration.

The countryside around Grand Hotel Tremezzo is full of hiking trails and cycle paths suited to any age or ability.  The concierge is happy to provide maps and assist with bike rental or organising walks and picnics.  The Panoramic Walk that winds up the hill through the hotel’s park is perfect for early morning jogging or a gentle stroll, and breathtaking views await visitors from the look-out at the top.

551106_num1142342For guests who delight in observing nature and want to create a souvenir that captures the magnificent landscape and views, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s own park is also the spot for painting lessons in what is simply one of the world’s most beautiful settings.

Further activities available at or through the Grand Hotel Tremezzo include a private clay tennis court offering guests a marvellous view over the lake for unforgettable matches, while nearby are no less than seven 18-hole golf courses – the concierge is happy to provide transport for golf enthusiasts.  Water sports on the lake include water-skiing, sailing, wind surfing, seaplane or fishing, and equipment and private lessons are available on request.

The hotel’s L’Escale Fondue & Wine Bar, the lake’s first and only fondue restaurant, offers guests a wine tasting experience featuring only the best Italian wines, such as Prosecco from the Veneto region served with local cold meats, pickles and homemade bread, and Pinot Grigio from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region matched with buffalo mozzarella Caprese salad, to name just two.  The hotel also offers cooking classes to guests wishing to learn how to make signature Italian dishes.

For a spot of sun-drenched relaxation, nothing beats the hotel’s private waterfront T Beach, with comfortable sun beds and umbrellas on the sand facing directly onto the lake and the floating swimming pool.  For a more secluded, tranquil swim, take a dip in the gorgeous Piscina dei Fiori (the pool among the flowers) in the hotel’s park, surrounded by palms, tulips and flowers of every type.  The seductive indoor infinity swimming pool – including five different types of Jacuzzi – is found at T Spa, the Grand Hotel Tremezza’s own beauty and health spa.

The T Spa offers treatments by ESPA that are personally tailored for total body and mind wellness.  Rituals inspired by traditional cultures and advanced treatments are performed by highly trained therapists, concentrating on stress-relief, health and age-defying results. There is also a Hammam Suite, Yoga Studio and old Hollywood-style Mosaico Studio dedicated exclusively to manicures and pedicures.

When it comes to the Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s Yoga Studio, in the new three-level T Fitness centre that enjoys spectacular views of the lake, there is definitely something to suit everyone – from beginners to everyday yogis.  Hatha, Yoga Nidra and Ashtanga Vinyasa sessions are offered, and in the warmer months yoga lessons take place outside in the peaceful flower-filled gardens of the centuries-old park on the grounds of the hotel.
